IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Allene Sherrill
Montgomery
October 23, 1927 – May 9, 2022
Allene Sherrill Montgomery, 94, of Raleigh NC, passed away at home on May 9, 2022.
She was born on October 23, 1927 in Lenoir (Caldwell County) NC. Her father was Wesley Newman Sherrill and her mother was Della Huffman Sherrill.
She attended Hickory High School in Hickory NC; Virginia Intermont College in Bristol VA; and Lenoir-Ryne University in Hickory, NC.
She was married to John Robert Montgomery Jr. for 48 years from December 12, 1949 until his death on February 13, 1998.
She was a founding member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Raleigh.
She provided volunteer support to the Raleigh Alanon organization and her church.
She dedicated her life to tirelessly loving and caring for her family and friends.
She was a dedicated UNC Tarheel basketball fan but could not watch unless they were at least
20 points ahead. If UNC was not winning she accused them of "letting the other team score".
She loved reading mystery novels which Bob teased her about for not being "scholarly" enough
(although he read a lot of them too) and watching Friends on TV.
She enjoyed attending musical theater, theatre, ballet, and symphony concerts and socializing
with her friends.
She traveled extensively with her best friend Jacque Burgess. They traveled throughout Europe
including Ireland, France, England, Greece, Italy, and Norway, which was her favorite. She took
a train trip across Canada and cruises to Alaska and through the Panama Canal. She enjoyed
beach trips with Jacques' family.
Predeceased by Bob, infant son James Cyrus, her beloved friend Jacque, siblings Paul Sherrill,
Harold Sherrill, Ellen Sherrill, and Arnold Sherrill. Survived by sons John (Katherine) and
Newman of Raleigh, grandchildren Karen (Greensboro) Louis (Raleigh) Ryan (Wake Forest) Kyle
(Wilmington) and her small white dog Jude.
Special thanks to Transitions Hospice for their kindness and care.
