Obituary of Andrew Williams

Andrew Clark Williams ( Andy, A.C., Bill ), 85, died January 9, 2011. He was born in Durham, N.C., the son of Halcott Hughes Williams and Daisy Van Inscoe Williams. Andy served in the U.S. Navy during the World War II; his assigned tour of duty was on the U.S.S. New York ( BB-34 ) in the South Pacific. He was a Seaman 2nd Class in Division 7A and received an Honorable Discharge on March 7, 1946. Andy was employed by the U.S. Postal service in his early years and worked for IBM for 24 years. He retired from IBM in 1989. Andy is survived by his wife, Gladys Rhodes Williams of the home; a daughter, Vicki W. Davis and husband, Rex of Cary, N.C.; a daughter, Debbie W. Biddix and husband, Tom of Clayton, N.C.; and a son, JaVan ( Buddy ) Clark Williams of Chester, S.C. He is survived by 4 grandchildren; Shannon Riggsbee McBride ( Steven ) of Barnardsville, N.C.; Jessica Kaye Biddix of Mt. Holly, N.C., Wade Clark Williams and Bradley Jay Williams of Durham, N.C. and one step-grandson, Matthew W. Davis of Surprise, AZ. He is survived by two great-grandchildren; Alan Connor McBride and Hayden Scott McBride of Bernardsville, N.C.; as well as a sister, Vivian Williams Casey Melvin of Hillsborough, N.C.; two nephews, Dr. Ronald Nelson Casey ( Barbara ) of Guildford, CT; Kirk Andrew Michael Williams (Kim) of Wexford, PA; and a neice, LuAnn Casey Latta ( David ) of Durham, N.C. He is also survived by a step-daughter, Sherri Scott and husband, John of Raleigh, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Vernell Hughes Williams of Dunedin, Florida, and his former wife and mother of his children, Pauline ( Polly ) Forbis Williams Graves. A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Ronald Poythress at Triangle Baptist Church, 9713 Old Stage Road, Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Entombment service will be private. Andy was a very special person and we loved him deeply. We will forever miss him with all our heart and soul. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Triangle Baptist Church, Hospice of Wake County, the Durham Crisis Response Center in Durham, N.C. or a charity of your choice.
