Annie Hicks Byrd, 81, departed this earthly life peacefully
in her home on December 25, 2021. Annie Doris, as she was affectionately called by her family and friends, grew up in Wilson, NC, and attended the Wilson County Public Schools. Born on January 29, 1940, in Wilson County, she was preceded in death by her mother, Sadie Hicks Williams; father, Isaac Norris, step-father, Melvin Williams and two brothers Frank Staton and Nathaniel Norris. Shortly after graduation from Darden High School, Ann moved to New York, where she met and married Raymond Randolph Byrd in 1960. She lived for a short time in Washington, D.C., but subsequently, she returned to Wilson and worked at Wilson Technical Institute and in the Wilson County Public Schools. While living in Wilson, Ann also attended Branch Memorial Church and was an active member for many years. Ann loved to sew when her children were young and she made many of their clothes. Many years later, Ann lived in Northern, VA, New Jersey, and finally settled in Cary, NC, where she spent her later years. While living in Northern Virginia, Ann retired from a rewarding career in the Federal Government. Ann loved lighthouses, flowers, and gardening. She was an avid reader and talented writer and journaled throughout her lifetime.
Spirituality and a relationship with Jesus Christ has always been important to Ann. Wherever she has lived, Ann always found a Church home and established herself as an active member. Ann has served in the choir, on the Pastor's Aid, in the dance ministry, as an usher, and in the Women's Ministry. She also faithfully attended Sunday School, Bible Study and prayer services.
Leaving to cherish fond memories of "Nummy" are her 6 children: Valarie Caple of Elizabeth City, NC; Keith Byrd; Kimberly Byrd, of Selma, NC; Kenneth Byrd of Raleigh, NC; Karen Danfa of Woodbridge, VA; and RaeJean Byrd of Woodbridge, VA; a devoted brother, Billie Thomas (Helen) Staton of Temple Hill, MD; Frances Edmundson (like a sister), Hampton, VA; 8 grandchildren: Philip Hicks (Brandi) of Columbia MD; Levie Lanier (Mimi) of Mobile, AL; Alfred A. Caple, Jr. of Elizabeth City; Matthew Byrd and Erika Byrd of Woodbridge, VA; Myles Garris and Myziah Garris of Gardner, NC; Paris Danfa of Woodbridge, VA; 7 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
