Bennie Roland Garner of Raleigh passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his beloved wife, Mary Helen, family, and friends.
He grew up and graduated high school at the Methodist Children's Home. He truly loved growing up there and had many fond memories of his childhood. Roland and his three brothers served in WWII. He was an Aviation Ordnanceman, 2nd Class (Tail-Gunner) in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 and was stationed in the Philippines and Guatemala. He worked for Harmon Volkswagon in the Parts Department for many years until retirement. He really enjoyed working in his yard all year round.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Mary Helen and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Mae Marcom Garner, his twin brother Roger, and brothers Willie and Grover; his sister Eva Mae House, Florence Griffin, and Margaret Tilghman.
The family will receive friends at Montlawn Funeral Home on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 11:00 am-12 pm. Funeral service will be in the Montlawn Chapel at 12 noon. Graveside service will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.
