Bernice Henderson Holman passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, at the age of 97. Born in Whatley Alabama on January10, 1928, to Della Robinson and William J. Henderson, Bernice was the youngest of 12 children. She shared a special bond with her siblings, Mattie, Louise and Ralph, with whom she remained close throughout her life.
Bernice was an exceptional woman whose accomplishments reflect the strength and dedication she carried throughout her life. As a student, she excelled in school, earning the title of high school valedictorian and serving as the captain of the basketball team, leading her team to a championship victory. She was particularly fond of her high school teacher, Mrs. Ousley, who made a lasting impact on her educational journey.
After completing her nursing training, Bernice was handpicked to become the first African American nursing assistant at Gary Mercy, a local Catholic hospital, marking an important milestone in her career.
In 1954, Bernice married James Floyd Holman Jr., and together they built a beautiful family. She is survived by her children: Sanford Holman (Roxie), Beverly Holman and Coleen Workman (Robert), as well as four grandchildren: Sandra, Jamie, Julian, and Tyler. Bernice was also a proud and loving great-grandmother to Aris, Lilli, Grant, and Beau.
Bernice was known for her sweet potato pies, and her love of plants, which brought beauty to her home and the lives of those around her. She was also a passionate motorcyclist, enjoying the thrill of the open road.
A memorial service to celebrate Bernice's life will begin on Saturday, March 8 at 9:30 a.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27603. Flowers may be directed to Montlawn Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
Bernice will be remembered for her kindness, resilience, and the immense love she shared with her family and friends. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
