Obituary of Betty Shugart

Betty McAfee Shugart, 78, of Raleigh, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away Tuesday evening November 12, 2013 at her home with her family by her side.

Betty was born in Black Mountain, NC on March 3, 1935, the daughter of the late Billy Joe McAfee and Marjorie Cordell McAfee. She was a team player at The Angus Barn restaurant in Raleigh for over 50 years. She began her career as a server, advancing to senior dining room manager and then kitchen manager. Betty oversaw one of the busiest kitchens in America, created recipes, trained hundreds of prep cooks and set a standard of excellence unmatched by anyone. She truly was an irreplaceable pillar at The Angus Barn and will be missed there forever.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, William H. Shugart; son, Billy Shugart (Susan); daughter, Kaye Knowles (Reter) and her faithful cocker spaniel companion "Freckles". Betty is also survived by her brother, Billy Joe McAfee, Jr., four grandchildren; Jonathan Shugart, Lindsay Neese, Billy Shugart III, Jennifer Knowles and seven great grandchildren.

A Celebration of her Life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Providence Baptist Church.
