Obituary of Betty Winslow

Betty Sorrell Winslow, age 76, of Apex, passed away on Monday, April 29th surrounded by her loving family after fighting a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and Pancreatic Cancer.

Betty was born June 29th, 1936 in Apex, to Woodrow and Inez Sorrell. She was married to Gale Norwood Winslow, her beloved husband of fifty-seven years.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1958. Upon graduation she taught nursing at Watts Hospital and UNC School of Nursing and worked at North Carolina Memorial Hospital for seven years. She then received her Occupational Health Nursing accreditation and dedicated over 20 years of occupational health service to Burroughs Wellcome Co. in Research Triangle Park. Betty received many nursing awards including induction into Sigma Theta Tau at UNC-CH and in 1994 was awarded the honor of "The Great 100" for excellence in practice, and commitment to the profession of nursing in North Carolina.

Betty was a caring, thoughtful, hardworking and compassionate and is best remembered for her loving spirit, generosity and kindness. Her memory will live forever in the many lives she touched. She enjoyed volunteering in church activities, gardening, and most especially preparing meals, baking, and hosting celebrations for family and friends.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Tommy Sorrell. She is survived by her beloved husband, Gale, brother Carl F. Sorrell, and sister, Jo Ann Sorrell Hunter both of Apex, NC, and her daughter Donna Bennett and her husband Michael of Coatesville, Pa, her daughter Karen Bean and husband David of Wilson, N.C. and daughter Wendy Kennedy and husband Chris of Cary, N.C. Lovingly called "Granny","Googan", and "Memaw Betty" she is survived by six grandchildren; Amber Bennett, Morgan Bean, Austin Bean, Chad Bean, Ava Grace and Mary Elizabeth Kennedy; and many extended family members in Wake County.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Betty's health care providers and especially Rhonda Gabr, MD, the Palliative Care Team of Duke Hospital, and the loving staff at Hock Family Pavilion of Duke Hospice. In addition, much appreciation is given to the many special home caregivers that have supported Betty for several years.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Montlawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Midway Baptist Church, 6901 Fayetteville Road, Raleigh. Entombment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Betty's memory to any Hospice or to the charity of one's choice.
