Obituary of Blonza Cowan

Blonza Bowers Cowan passed away on Friday, September 5th. She was born September 13, 1918 in rural Wake County, the middle of nine children born to Eunice Rebecca Weatherspoon and James Arthur Bowers.

Blonza was preceded in death by her parents, all eight of her siblings, her husband James Donald Cowan, Sr and her son-in-law Michael Edwards. She is survived by her two children, James Donald Cowan, Jr. (Sarah) and Rebecca Cowan Edwards, both of Raleigh; her three grandchildren, Elizabeth Michele Arnold of Fleming Island, Florida, Coleman MacDonaldson Cowan (Angela) of New York City, and Duren Cowan Banks (Brett) of Raleigh; and her four great grandchildren, Olivia Rose Arnold of Fleming Island, Florida, Caitlin James Banks and John Mason Banks of Raleigh, and Julian Hayes Cowan of New York City.

Blonza was retired from Great American Insurance Company and also from Cowan Tours, which she owned and operated and through which she made many traveling friends. Blonza loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church in Raleigh for more than 60 years, teaching the T.E.L. Sunday school class for 30 years. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be sent to Temple Baptist Church, 1417 Clifton Street, Raleigh, NC 27604.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 12th at 2:00 pm at Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 2911 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home before the service, from 12:30 pm until 2:00 pm.
