David Watkins, Jr. entered the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, March 16, 2016. He passed away peacefully of natural causes.
He was born on Christmas Day 1925 in Raleigh, NC to loving parents, now deceased, Carey D. Watkins, Sr. and Bessie Morris Watkins. He grew up on the family dairy farm on Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh and married his high school sweetheart, Mucie Harrison Watkins on July 12, 1944. They were married for 72 years.
He attended Bible college earning an undergraduate degree, followed by a master's degree in education administration from George Peabody College at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN.
He had a passion for teaching and preaching God's Word which lead to assisting in founding Christian schools in the 1950's. This led to a family mission endeavor in Peru, South America serving as headmaster of a boarding school for missionary kids.
He is survived by his loyal and loving wife, Mucie Harrison Watkins; daughter Bess W. Dew and husband Johnie; sons David and Mickey Watkins; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; sisters, Martha Tola and Mildred Whittlesey.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Tracy Atkins Watkins and T. Wrey Watkins; his sister, Mary W. Lee.
A funeral service will be held 12 noon Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Private interment will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm on Saturday prior to the service.
