Obituary of Cecil Fuquay

Cecil Adair Fuquay passed away on Friday, August 23 at the age of 89. Cecil was a lifelong resident of Coats, North Carolina until he moved to Independence Village in Raleigh, North Carolina eight years ago.

Mr. Fuquay was born in Erwin, North Carolina on September 9, 1923 to Dr. Cecil Garner Fuquay and Gladys Stewart Fuquay. Cecil was very active playing in a number of baseball leagues during his youth and high school years where he graduated from Coats High School. He held a Bachelor of Science degree from Wake Forest University and a Masters of Art and Education from East Carolina University.

In 1943 he entered the Army Air Corps and flew on a B-26 as an armorer gunner in the European Theater and completed his military service at the end of World War II. When the war ended he returned to Wake Forest University and upon graduation taught Health, Physical Education, Chemistry, Natural Science and Drivers Education.

He met and married Shirley Ann Dupree on August 9, 1958 and settled in Coats, North Carolina where he was very active working as a city councilman and other community related activities.

In 1971 he joined Lafayette Union School in Lillington, North Carolina as principal where he served through his retirement in 1986. Upon his retirement he worked with handicapped adults and taught woodworking classes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Gladys, and his wife. He is survived by his daughters, Lisa Wallace (Keith) of Raleigh, Karen Heiliger (Mark) of Raleigh and granddaughters Olesia and Natalia Heiliger.

His family will receive friends at Montlawn Funeral Home on Sunday, August 25 from 3:00-5:00 pm. The funeral will be held on Monday, August 26 at 1:00 pm at Montlawn Funeral Home followed by burial with military honors at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.

The pallbearers will be Donnie Dupree, Fred Genet, Mark Heiliger, Preston Short, Joe Tart and Keith Wallace. The honorary pallbearers are Earl Stanford and Stuart Totty.
