RALEIGH

CoraLynn Young Harward Marshall of Durham, NC passed away Sunday, January 9, 2022 at Croasdaile Village. She was born May 7, 1925 in Raleigh, NC to Dr. Thurman Lando Young and Carol Strong Young.

As a child, CoraLynn grew up in Raleigh and loved to recount the many weekend trips to Durham with her father to see the building of Duke Chapel. It was on these trips that her love for all things Duke first developed. It was also on one of these trips that she confidently told her father that when old enough, she would one day walk by the Chapel as a Duke student. True to her word, she graduated Broughton High School in 1942 and subsequently enrolled in the Women's College at Duke University. At Duke, she was involved in many facets of campus life including the Sigma Kappa Sorority. She graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.

After graduation, CoraLynn began her career as a CPA in Raleigh where she also met her husband Steve. They married on April 7, 1947 and moved to Durham to start their family and open their own practice. Steve and CoraLynn lived on Sevier Street and were known for being the most gracious hosts often looking for any opportunity to entertain friends and neighbors. After raising their two sons, CoraLynn decided to return to Duke, but this time as a law student at the age of 50. She received her Juris Doctor in 1978 and worked as an attorney for more than 20 years before retiring. Steve and CoraLynn enjoyed 46 years of marriage before his death in 1993.

CoraLynn devoted herself to the community. She served as the president of the Durham Council of Garden Clubs, was a member of the Campus Club at Duke, a founding member of the Iron Dukes, a volunteer at Duke Gardens, and a long-time member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church. CoraLynn continued to enjoy any Duke athletic or social event well into her 90's. When not at Duke, she could be seen spending summers at her beach condo on Oak Island or Friday nights at the University Club in Durham with a good martini in hand and the laughter of friends or family nearby.

Before her death, she established the Stephen and CoraLynn Harward Scholarship Fund at Duke Law School and the Thurman Lando and Carol Strong Young Endowment for the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort, NC in memory of her parents.

Surviving are son James T. Harward and wife, Marianne Harward of Cary; son, Dr. Timothy R.S. Harward and wife, Dr. Mary P. Harward of Costa Mesa, CA; grandson, Dr. Stephen C. Harward II and wife Mary Rand Harward of Durham; grandson, Thomas T. Harward and wife Margeaux Akazawa of Aliso Viego, CA; granddaughter, Christina Harward of New York, NY; and great grandchildren, Ausley, Rand, William, and James Harward. CoraLynn is predeceased by her husband, Stephen Cannada Harward and second husband, Roger Marshall.

The family would like to extend their thanks to Croasdaile Village and the staff at Magnolia Assisted Living.
