Donald L. Coates, 85, died peacefully on Thursday, September 10, 2015. He was the owner/operator of Campus Auto, with a wrecker service, on Hillsborough Street. He lived on Laurel Hills Drive for 40 years and moved to Prestonwoods in Cary in 2006.

He was an avid baseball fan and player who earned the Harry Porter batting award in 1950 with a 371 batting average. He also played for the American Legion.

Donald loved football was a member of the Wolpack Club for many years, loved playing pool at his son's sports bar, Brass Tap and Billiards, but his favorite past time was playing golf with his many friends at Prestonwoods.

Surviviors include his wife, Annette Ross Coates of Cary; son, Anthony Lewis Coates and wife Kathryn of Cary; grandson, Cameron Lee Coates of Cary.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 pm Sunday at Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 - 1:00 pm on Sunday prior to the service.
