Nowell
January 30, 1932 – October 16, 2022
Douglas Hubert Nowell, 90, of Raleigh, went to be with his heavenly family on October 16, 2022. He was born in Raleigh on January 30, 1932 a son of the late Henry and Asenath (Wellons) Nowell.
Doug graduated from Hugh Morson High School in Raleigh. He served in the US Army as a heavy tank mechanic. He was married for 67 years to his loving wife Sue (Woodlief) Nowell.
Doug retired from BellSouth after 33 years of service, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was an avid Boy Scout Leader, serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 361 for 16 years. He sent many future young men on their path to adulthood. In addition he took groups of scouts on 10 separate excursions to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM. He received numerous accreditations from the National Boy Scout office. Doug was a member of the Westover Methodist Church, where he served on the finance committee as well as many others. He was also a member of West Raleigh Exchange Club since 1968. There he was past president for 5 terms, board member, chairman of Baseball committee and youth of the month committee. He was honored with one of the ballfields being named after him, and was also presented with the Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Sue; his son, Rodney Nowell; daughter, Brenda Clancy and husband, Mike; grandchildren: Kristin Vaughan, Preston Clancy, Ashton McBrayer, and Kendall Nowell; great-grandchildren: Abby Vaughan, Faith Vaughan and Aven Clancy.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Montlawn Funeral and Cremation Services, 2911 S. Wilmington St. Raleigh.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 21, 2022 in the chapel of Montlawn Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park where military honors will be rendered.
