Frances W. Stevens
Frances W. Stevens, 87, of Raleigh, NC, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2010 at Britthaven of Smithfield.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Fairmont United Methodist Church, 2501 Clark Avenue in Raleigh. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. A graveside service will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, 2911 S. Wilmington St. in Raleigh.
Frances was born in Richmond, VA on August 25, 1922 to Julian and Lula Wills. She graduated from Mary Washington College as a Physical Education Teacher. Frances had a love for dance which took her to New York University where she met her husband Jim. They were married a short time later in Richmond, VA in August 1947. Frances and Jim moved to NC where she became a stay at home mom as well as conducted a girls camp with the city of Raleigh Parks and Recreation. Frances became a dance instructor with Meredith College and remained with the college for 17 years. She was a loyal member of Fairmont United Methodist Church where she taught Bible School and was the Director for the Social Concerns Committee.
Frances is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Brooks of Raleigh, NC and Carolyn Hobgood, husband JD of Clayton, NC; grandchildren, James (Mac) Hobgood, wife Rhonda of Las Vegas, NV, Steven Brooks of Raleigh, NC, and Frances Hobgood Watson, husband Brian of Fort Meade, MD; great grandchildren, Cody, Torie and JB Watson; nieces, Mary Ellen Guthrie of Dilwyn, VA and Judy Hanger, husband Hank of Hinton, WV.
Frances is preceded in death by her husband James S. Stevens, Jr. and her son, James S. Stevens, III.
