Obituary of Frederick Greger

Frederick Augustus Greger, 87, passed away Wednesday morning, April 28, 2010 after a courageous battle with numerous health issues.

Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Montlawn Funeral Home chapel. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum with Military Honors.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Fred is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bettye Whitehurst Greger; daughter, Paula Speight and her husband Roy of Garner; sons, Ron Greger of Durham and Brian Greger and his wife Rive' of San Francisco, CA; granddaughter, Heather Pennica and her husband Tony of Raleigh; grandson, Stan Ferguson and his wife Jennifer of Raleigh; stepdaughter, Cathy Miller and her husband Eddie of Red Lion, PA; great grandchildren, Peyton and Connor Pennica, Britt Pittinger, and Matthew and Joseph Miller. He was loved dearly by his family and will be truly missed.

He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, PA. Upon graduation from high school, he worked at General Electric in Erie, PA. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II serving off the Gambier Bay Escort Carrier.

After serving in the Marine Corps, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. He was an industrial sales representative and manager for Grace Corp., Woodard Iron Co., and Durawear. In his work travels, he made a lot of good and longtime friends. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and have been to over 65 countries. During their travels, they acquired many new friends. They lived in Birmingham, AL for 10 years and then moved to Raleigh where they have lived for 45 years.

He became a member of Benson Memorial Methodist Church. He was dedicated to Scouting, and he was an Eagle Scout, Sea Scout and acquired Scouting's top award, the Wood Badge. He organized and started troops in Erie, PA and Benson Memorial United Methodist Church. He was responsible for the start of Troop 214 of Raleigh. He was very active in the Occoneechee Council and served on the Round Table for many of their functions. He loved the outdoors, hiking and camping. He hiked the Tetons with his son, Brian.

Fred was a member and president of the North Raleigh Exchange Club and started the annual Foster Parents picnic. He was committed to the youth and helping others.
