Garland Luther Harris, Jr., 77, of Cary, NC passed away on September 21, 2021. He was the son of the late Garland Luther Harris, Sr. and Ida Bell Harris.
G. L. is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann Cooper Harris; his son, Garland Luther Harris, III and wife, Jessica; and his daughter, Karen Harris Brock and husband, Rob. He is also survived by his granddaughters, the loves of his life, Ella Harris, Lily Harris, Olivia Brock and Melanie Brock. He is also survived by his sisters, Jo Ann Weavil and husband Nathan and Jeanne Gillenwater and husband Dean, and many nieces and nephews.
G.L. was born in Goldsboro, NC on December 31, 1943. He grew up in Jacksonville, NC and graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1962. Growing up, he enjoyed playing pony league baseball, and pitched a no hitter in the 8 th grade. He went on to attend North Carolina State University and graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering.
He began his career with DuPont in Kinston, NC. Most of his career, he worked for the State of North Carolina in the Departments of Public Instruction and the North Carolina Office of Information Technology. He retired with over 30 years of service in state government. When he retired, the Governor awarded G.L. with North Carolina's highest award for service to the state, The Order of the Longleaf Pine.
G.L. was a proud Dad and Grandpa. He enjoyed attending all of the kids and grandkid's activities over the years. He especially enjoyed being a marching band dad.
G.L.'s family would like to offer a special thanks to the Wake Med Surgical ICU staff and Pruitt Health Care.
G.L. will be laid to rest on Monday, September 27 th at 11am at Montlawn Funeral Home. There will be a live stream link available 10 minutes prior to the start of the service for those who are unable to attend.
Due to Covid concerns and the well-being of our friends, the family will not be hosting a formal visitation. All are welcomed to come to Montlawn Funeral Home to pay their respects to G.L. prior to Monday.
G.L.'s funeral service on Monday, September 27 at 11:00 am will be held outside under the portico at Montlawn Funeral Home and Cremation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Food Bank of Eastern NC.
