Obituary of Geneva Simpson

Geneva Barrow Simpson a loving mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Aunt, to many nieces and nephews, passed away on March 31, 2015, from illness due to a stroke. Geneva was a native of Craven County, but spent most of her life in Raleigh where her two children were born. Geneva was the daughter of the late Charles Cleveland Barrow and Dorcas Edwards Barrow. Geneva attended Vanceboro Public Schools along with her 8 brothers and sisters.

Geneva was preceded in death by her husband John Alexander Simpson of Vanceboro. After the death of her husband Geneva moved from Vanceboro back to Raleigh to continue raising her two children.

Geneva worked with the NC State Teacher's retirement system until she reached retirement age and then she started work at Wake Memorial (currently Wake Med) Hospital as a nurse's assistant in 1988. Geneva enjoyed her work both with the NC retirement system and with Wake Med where she was once selected as employee of the month for her work with the staff and her caring contributions to the patients.

Geneva along with her two children were active in St Mark's Episcopal Church when the church was in its formation period. The church originally met at Enloe High School, in the mid and late 60's before moving into the current facility at 1725 N. New Hope Road in Raleigh.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at St Marks on April 18, 2015 at 2 PM. Any questions regarding the service can be directed either to Montlawn Funeral Home at 919-772-1073 or to St. Mark's at 919-231-6767. Geneva's remains will be placed at the Oakwood Mausoleum in a private ceremony.

Geneva was often described as a "most gracious lady" and as a "rock" that many friends and family could always count on. Her smile and her kind words, for everyone she met, will be missed but those that knew her best will be comforted by her memory rather than morn her loss.

Surviving: Son John David Simpson, wife Janet, two daughters Michelle and Danielle. Daughter Sara Simpson Robbins and her two daughters Amanda Robbins Jones and Jennifer Robbins Ladd. Jennifer is the proud parent of Geneva's Great Grandson Connor.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
