Obituary of Gladys Robbins

Gladys Strickland Robbins, beloved and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother died May 26, 2015 at the age of 84 in Warrenton, VA. She is remembered by family and friends for her love of family, her

commitment to her church and her love of the written word. She is preceded in death by her parents Henry Clinton, Sr. and Mabel Rachel Stelle Strickland, siblings Marjorie Strickland, Henry Clinton Strickland, Jr. and Joyce Bennett and her husband of 55 years, Howard Candler Robbins.

She is survived by her three children, Kimberly Robbins Reardon, Joanna Robbins Allen, and Susan Robbins Watson and their spouses Timothy Reardon, Robert Glenn Allen, and Joseph Osborne Watson, Jr. as well as five grandchildren Samuel Howard Gregory and wife Sara, Sarah Allen and husband Mark, Emily Allen, Hannah Allen, and Alexander Watson.

Gladys was valedictorian of the 1949 class at Angier High School. She completed her bachelors at East Carolina Teachers College with a degree in Library Science and Social Studies. She taught for a time in the Wake County Public School System before starting her career as a Librarian first with the Olivia Raney Library and later the State Library of North Carolina in Raleigh, North Carolina. She remained with the State Library of North Carolina until her retirement. In the early 1970's, she and her family returned to live in the town of her birth, Angier North Carolina. She was an active member of the Angier United Methodist Church and The Order of the Eastern Star, 351 as well as being a Master Gardener. She was an accomplished pianist and loved needlepoint. Gladys will be remembered by her family and friends as loving and patient with a quick wit and a gift for the English language.
