Obituary of Gordon Greene

Gordon Andrews Greene, 76, loving husband, father, and grandfather of Raleigh, passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at Sunrise of Cary.

Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Francis United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at Montlawn Funeral Home from 3-5 p.m. Sunday.

A native of Montgomery County, Gordon was the son of the late Charles and Minnie Brookshire Greene. He retired as a Regional Manager with Carolina Power & Light Co. (now Progress Energy) with 35 years of service. He served on the Board of Directors of their Political Action Committee and was a member of the Industrial Development Committee for eastern North Carolina.

Gordon was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. He served as a Lay Delegate to the Annual Conference, was a Stephen Minister and teacher of Disciple Bible Study I, II and III. After retirement, he was a volunteer pre-school bus driver for the church and restored bicycles for underprivileged children.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club in several cities across North Carolina. He was an avid landscaper, collected and restored unique and antique vehicles and was a motorcycle enthusiast. He touched many lives with his fabulous sense of humor.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rebecca Griffin Greene; son, Paul F. Greene and his wife Christy of Apex; daughters, Caroline Greene Outman and her husband Richard of Rhode Island, Jennifer Greene Alsaffar and her husband Mohammed of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Brendon Alsaffar, Grace Greene and Julia Greene; brother, Hunter Greene of Mt. Gilead; sisters, Mary Ellen Haywood of Mt. Gilead and Lydia Bowden of Virginia Beach, VA. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Keith.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the staff of Sunrise of Cary and Hospice of Wake County for the compassionate care they provided Gordon during his final months.
