Obituary

Harold Livingston Smith, 88, of Cary, NC, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, as loved ones held his hands. He was born in Morrisville, NC, February 17, 1937, the son of Josie Ruth Beal and Paul Livingston Smith and grew up with his two sisters on a 16-acre farm. Instilled during his early years was an incredible love of outdoors and a stellar work ethic.

Harold met his beloved wife Martha Rose "Bee" Mendenhall in the halls of Cary High School where they were classmates and named the Most Athletic superlative of their 1955 graduating class. He was a three-sport varsity athlete at CHS and afterwards pursued his love of baseball and football at Chowan College. After college, Harold worked at Sanders Motor Company and Seaboard Railroad before becoming a Letter Carrier with the US Postal Service in Cary, retiring in 1994 after 34 years of service. Outside of work he enjoyed coaching youth football, basketball, and baseball. Harold especially enjoyed coaching the Cary American Legion Post 67 baseball team for several years with his best friend from childhood, Clay. When not coaching he faithfully carried the chains with his buddies on Friday nights at CHS and umpired high school and DIII baseball games across NC. Harold was inducted into the second class of the CHS Sports Hall of Fame. His memory will live on in the lives he touched through sports and friendship.

Harold cherished his family and is survived and missed by his wife of 67 years, Bee; his children Bryan (Judith) of Naples, FL, Bradley of Naples, FL, Carol of Cary, NC, and Kathy Ellis (Clark) of Cary, NC; five grandchildren Matthew, Marshall, Bryson (Blake), Cassidy and Jake; two great-grandchildren, Byrdie and Baron; sister Gailya S. Winters of Cary, NC; sister-in-law Esther Mendenhall of Cary, NC; brother-in-law Louis Yates of Raleigh, NC; dearly loved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Edythe S. Yates; brothers-in-law W. Glenn "Sonny" Winters and W. Guy Mendenhall, Jr.; and stepmother Elva S. Smith.
