Harvey Frederick Waller (Fred) passed away Friday October 12th at 6:15 p.m. at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC. Waller left this earth surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 69 years , Phyllis Moore Waller, three children, David Waller, Donna Downey and Debbie Meacomes and husband Jonny. Waller is also survived by four grandchildren, Daniel Kitto (Wife C.J.), Ryan Downey (Wife Josette), Megan Dunston (Husband Gabriel), and Blair Wallace (Husband Carl), and three great grandchildren, Michelle Downey, Ivy Dunston and Breydan Kitto. Waller was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Frederick Waller and Zelma Wilder Waller, brother, Frank Edward Waller and infant sister, Kate B. Waller.

Fred spent his entire adult life in service to others. After graduation from North Carolina State as a Military Honor Graduate he went on to serve in the Navy and Air Force in numerous roles reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retirement after 34 years.  Waller and his wife are founding members of Long View Baptist church in Raleigh where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He was a leader in his congregation in many other ways including spearheading the community's move from its original location on New Bern Avenue to its current home on New Hope Rd., where he seemingly watched each brick laid.

Known by some of his peers as "the God of Asphalt," because of his long and distinguished career as an asphalt engineer, Waller worked with the Asphalt institute of Raleigh where he rose to be one of its most sought-after employees due to his tremendous knowledge, intuition and expertise in his field. His unyielding dedication to his profession kept him working regularly as a consultant two decades after formal retirement. Waller gave numerous certification lectures to engineering students at universities up and down the east coast and was constantly in demand as an expert witness in cases involving his field. His clients never lost a case.

Before his health began to decline later in life, Waller spent his free time travelling the country with his wife and grandchildren in cars crowded with snacks and activity books. Getaways included annual trips to Emerald Isle, memorable vacations to Disney World, Six Flags over Georgia, and once in a lifetime journeys to places such as the Holy Land in Israel and Europe allowing Waller to break away from his confines and stick a pin on nearly every continent.

Visitation for Mr. Waller will be held at Montlawn Funeral Home in Raleigh for family and friends Tuesday October 16 from 11-12 followed by funeral services at 12 Noon.  In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Longview Baptist Church.
