Herbert Leon Rushing, 79, of Cary, NC, passed away surrounded by his family on
December 25, 2025.

Leon was born on August 25, 1946. He graduated in 1965 from Fayetteville Senior
High. He then served in the Army in Germany as a military police officer from
1966 to 1968. Following his military service, he was a Raleigh police officer for
several years, a NC Department of Corrections officer, and then a painting
contractor before retiring in 2020.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Baxter and Maude Lee Rushing,
and his brother, Ira Baxter Rushing. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years,
Judy, his children, Bryan Rushing of Wake Forest, his daughter, Megan Hare of
Raleigh, grandchildren, Eelan Hare, Aaron Hare, Wyatt Rushing, and Emma
Rushing. He is also survived by his brother Dohn Rushing of Clayton, sister Marie
Sloan (Bruce) of Clayton, and sister Mary Robinson (Roland) of Garner.
Leon was a man of faith, a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He loved helping others and was willing to help in any way he could. He was a member of
Wesley Memorial United Methodist church, where he worked with Habitat for
Humanity, the Shepherd's Table Soup Kitchen, trips to help the youth work on the
Appalachian Service Projects, and down East to help after hurricane Floyd.
He enjoyed family time. Whether it was a meal together, camping with the
grandchildren, a family trip to the beach or mountains, hiking at different parks or
traveling around the country with family and friends. Leon had the natural ability
to look at anything and paint a beautiful picture, which he enjoyed doing.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 1 pm in the Chapel
of Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27603. The family
will receive visitors one hour prior to the service, beginning at 12 pm.
