Obituary

Jackie Thigpen Umstead Johnson, age 86, of Roswell, Georgia, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, at Historic Roswell Place in Roswell, Georgia.

Born on Saturday, June 1, 1940, in Wayne County, North Carolina, Jackie was the daughter of the late James Eddie Thigpen and Ann Howell Thigpen.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Hilda Richardson, first husband, Alexander Wiley Umstead; her second husband, the Rev. George William Johnson; one daughter, Sharon Jackson; and one son, Eric Johnson.

Jackie spent her entire professional career with Bank of America, starting as a teller and working her way up to an Area Vice President. She retired after more than 41 years of dedicated service.

Throughout her life, she was deeply involved in the United Methodist Church, especially at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Roxboro, NC and Garner United Methodist Church in Garner, NC. As the wife of a United Methodist minister, Jackie faithfully supported her husband's ministry and embraced a ministry of her own through service, compassion, love, and encouragement.

Jackie was a great cook; avid reader and she absolutely loved to care for others. However, her favorite thing to do was to “just visit” with all types of people. Jackie loved visiting friends, family, church members, or anyone in need. She consistently shared her love and faith through handwritten notes, phone calls, texts, visits, and prayers. She was known as a sincere and compassionate listener who always offered a nonjudgmental ear and spiritual encouragement to those facing life's challenges. Jackie wanted everyone she encountered to know they were not alone and that God would provide them with strength, peace, courage, and most of all salvation through his son Jesus Christ.

Jackie's eyes especially sparkled when she was surrounded by her family. Those left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy include her son, Kevin Alexander Umstead and wife, Lynn, of Milton, Georgia; her daughter, Mary George Johnson of Durham, North Carolina; and her brother, Jim Thigpen and wife, Jacki, of Albany, Oregon.

To those that adored her most she was simply known as “Nana”. Jackie is also survived by her grandchildren, Skylar Umstead, Ava Umstead, Lyla Umstead, Alex Jackson, Jenna Marie Jackson, Savannah Bath and Claire Crocker; and her great-grandchildren, Colton Jackson, Everly Jackson, Elizabeth Satterwhite, and Noah Bath.

Jackie's life of faith, service, and unwavering support touched countless lives. Her legacy will continue through her family, friends, church communities, and all those who were blessed to know her.

Family and friends will gather from 12:00 p.m. until 12:45p.m. on June 11, 2026, at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington Street, Raleigh, North Carolina 27603.

A funeral service honoring her life and cherished memories will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home with Dr. Chris Partin, Pastor of Plymouth Church, officiating.

Interment will immediately follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
