James Lewis Gurkin,101, of Smithfield, NC, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, James lived a long and remarkable life full of service, curiosity, and love for family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elizabeth, with whom he shared a life rich in love and partnership.

At just 16 years old, James enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War 11, stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge at 21. After his military service, he built a long career with the Southern Railroad, where he was known for his strong work ethic and skill with his
hands-always building, fixing, or improving something.

James was a man of many talents and interests. He achieved the rank of Life Master in the game of Bridge, and his love for history and family led him to Create a detailed ancestry book and website, preserving generations of family stories and heritage.

He is survived by his sons, Richard and Charles; his daughter-in-law, Cynthia; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed by his wisdom, humor, and unwavering support.

His life will be honored in a private family service. !n lieu of flowers, the family invites you to cherish time with loved ones, enjoy a game of cards, or explore your family roots-just as James so often did.
