James C. Spence, 90, affectionately known as "Sonny Boy" passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023. He was born May 19, 1933 in Wake County to the late Rev. Bealey Mayden Spence and Lavina Nan Bryant Spence. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather.
"Sonny Boy" grew up in the heart of Raleigh, where he was surrounded by a beloved, close knit family of many. During his early years, he resided with his grandparents Oscar and Myrtle, on occasion. He enjoyed life as a boy he had many endeavors. He worked on a vegetable truck with his grandpa, delivered papers for the N&O, worked at a garage, and many more. There were times that he would work multiple jobs at one time. After graduating from Hugh Morrison High he continued his journey. He met and married Margaret Smith, the love of his life, together they had 2 children Rick and Tim. Obviously, supporting his family was a challenge during those times. However, he had the mindset that they were opportunities. He was employed at a meat packing plant, sold insurance, dispatched for NC Highway patrol, Served his country in US Army during the Korean War, and retired from NC Revenue Dept. with 30 years at age 53. He was a private man, who enjoyed his 37 years retired and recited stories and memories of his life until just days before he passed.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his siblings: Margaret Tucker, Nathan Spence, Katherine Mashburn, Jane Barham, Boyd Spence, Eugene Spence, Maxine Spence.
James is survived by children Claude Spence (Barbara) of Raleigh, Timothy Spence of Raleigh, grandchildren: Brandy Hopkins (Jacob) of Hanahan SC; Heather Spence of Raleigh, Justin Spence of Raleigh. great-grandchildren: Sarah Hopkins and Alex Hopkins of Hanahan SC. brother:Ernest Spence of Greenville and sister:Carolyn S. Doepner of Asheville.
He will be missed even though he will not be with us, he will never be forgotten. His love will last forever. We will see him in Heaven one day.
A graveside service will be held at Noon October 2nd 2023 Montlawn Memorial Park.
