Obituary of James Tyson
James Edward "Shorty" Tyson, Sr., 95, of Raleigh, passed away Monday evening, April 1, 2013 at his residence.
A Funeral Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1 - 2 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service.
Born September 21, 1917 in Raleigh, James was the son of the late Nathan Tyson and Lillie Mae Spikes Tyson who immigrated from England. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
James was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in WWII as a Fireman's 1st Class and Electrician's mate. He worked for the News and Observer for 37 years as a type setter and was an inventor and owner of Flow Divider Co. James was an avid square dancer, enjoying his time with The Raleigh Ramblers, Rainbow Squares, and Star Twirlers.
James is survived by his loving wife of 40 wonderful years, Nell Tyson of Raleigh; sons, James Edward Tyson, Jr. and his wife Charlotte of Beaufort, NC, Bruce Macon Tyson and his wife Brenda of Raleigh; daughters, Donna Tetrault of Raleigh, Kathryn Broughton and husband Al of Raleigh, Ann Byerly and husband Gary of Garner, Susan Cole of Raleigh; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in memory of James to the Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 or the Mount Vernon Baptist Church building fund, 7600 Falls of Neuse Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615.
