Obituary

Jetta Funderburk Spencer passed peacefully away on June 9, 2025, at the Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Charles O. and Etta Haywood Funderburk. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, John Graham Spencer and 2 sisters, Atha Keaton and Jewell Cargill. Jetta is survived by sons, Graham Spencer Jr. and his wife Beverly of Raleigh, Dr. Jim Spencer and wife Sandy of Kannapolis: 5 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren." She is also survived by 2 nephews, Charles and Paul Cargill of Raleigh.

Jetta was a 1947 graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh. While there, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and Sociology. She was also voted Senior Class President and May Queen. Jetta was a member of the Silver Shield, an honorary leadership society at Meredith. Upon graduation Jetta worked as a religious Education Director at the North Winston Baptist Church and later; after getting married, she worked in the Social Service Department in Rockingham, N.C. where she was an aid to the Dependent Children Specialist. She worked various other part time jobs before retiring. Her main occupation was making a home for her husband and sons. She enjoyed preparing delicious meals for her family. Jetta also enjoyed playing bridge, golf and watching football and basketball games with her husband and family.

Graham and Jetta joined Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh in 1948 right after they were married. They made lifelong friends while serving there.  After Graham finished N.C. State College, they lived in Raleigh but also Thomasville, N.C., Elizabethton, Tenn., and Sanford, N.C. Jetta served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and volunteer in various mission activities in Baptist churches in every town where they settled. Most recently, Jetta volunteered with the "In As Much" ministry at Hayes Barton. She was deeply devoted to her Lord, church and family.

In 2009 Jetta and Graham moved to Glenaire in Cary. Over the years they made many friends. She was involved in many activities including volunteering with the Spiritual Life Committee and arranging flowers every Wednesday to be given to Glenaire residents.

Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all benefited from her love, exceptional cooking and wonderful sense of humor. Her memory will live in our hearts and in the stories that we will continue to share.

"A Celebration of Life Service" will be held on Sunday, June 29 at 2:30 at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the church Fellowship Hall. The burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers donations in the memory of Jetta may be made to Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27608.
