Obituary

By Susan Tegtmeier Casey

Joan Rose Tegtmeier, 90, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on December 4, 2019.  Joan was born on June 17, 1929 in the Bronx, New York to the late Stratis and Anna Scandalis.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Leo Erich Tegtmeier, son Erich Leo Tegtmeier and sister Tatania Monti.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Susan T. Casey and son-in-law Walker Casey.  She is also survived by her sister Anastasia Hatsis, grandson Steven Erich Wade, granddaughter Kimberly Wad and great-granddaughters Lauren and Leah Racey.

Joan was raised in the Bronx on Fox Street, where she became proficient at Double Dutch.  She used to join my friends and I jumping rope and put us all to shame.  After high school "Joanie" and Leo married settling in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx overlooking Eastchester bay. Swimming and boating were on the agenda though Joan always claimed she could not swim.

Joan became a homemaker and was hired by NY Telephone as a cord board operator, later becoming a long distance operator. Joanie loved that job and the family moved upstate in 1966 to Wappingers Falls. Mom found a job in retail. She loved that job too.  She then became a bookkeeper for the family's Exxon service station business.  Joan and Leo eventually retired and relocated to North Carolina to be with family.

By Maddy Oremus Palmese - to Susie

"Mom was an outgoing, friendly person and fastidious in how she dressed and looked.  She loved to travel and visit the "Jewish Alps" a.k.a. the Catskills Mountain Resorts. She would go with your aunts, friends from LI., to the different hotels. We went with them one summer weekend to The Concord, they really enjoyed the social aspect of these places. When they went on cruises, they always came back with newfound friend stories. Like the couple they stayed in contact with from England. This couple did come to the States to stay with your parents. Your mom and dad would go dancing, either Friday or Saturday at the Ramada Inn or Holiday Inn.  She painted beautiful pictures and I remember them at both houses.

"Your mom enjoyed bowling and playing progressive rummy. They would usually come to our house because we had little ones at the time. I remember her driving around in a Forest Green Ford Fairlane. She loved that car. I think your parents still had it down in NC. After your parents moved, we stayed in touch and the few times when they did come up to NY, they would come and stay with us.

"I will cherish all the memories of your parents and I know they are back together as they were!!"
