John passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 12th while in Hospice Care. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Steven Melvin & Linda Hanshaw Melvin. John is survived by his wife, Mary Thomas Melvin; a very special Aunt Brenda(Kent) Swinson that is his 2nd Mom; cousin Christy(Barry) Thornton, that is like his sister; Justin Flippo, best friend & caregiver, that is also like his son; Justin's daughter Jaiden that is like John's granddaughter; Also, lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins that love him dearly.
John graduated from Fuquay-Varina High School in 1983 where he played football all 4 years. He went on to coach football at Fuquay from 1984 to 1991. He retired from The City of Raleigh in December 2016.
John's Celebration of Life will be Saturday, September 30th at 12:00pm. It will be held at Plymouth Church 6104 Rock Service Station Rd. Raleigh 27603.
