Obituary of John Putnam

John Douglas Putnam, 72, of Raleigh, passed away Sunday evening, October 30, 2011 at Rex Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral Service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 -3 p.m. Wednesday.

A native of Johnston County, Mr. Putnam was the son of the late John Preston Putnam and Sarah Ann Johnson Putnam. He was retired as the Yard Master with Norfolk Southern Railway after 38 years of service and also farmed his entire life and was a wonderful provider for his family. In his precious little spare time, he enjoyed fishing with his brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Collins Putnam; daughter, Sarah Evelyn Putnam of Raleigh; sons, Bryan Anthony Putnam of New York, New York and Darrell Alan Putnam and his wife, Kelly Lynn Curtis of Cary; grandchildren, Kristen, Jacob and Lauren Shackley; great granddaughter, Mikayla Lynn "KK"; his brothers, Joseph Donald Putnam and David Earl Putnam, both of Smithfield, Robert Marshall Putnam of Clayton as well as several nieces and nephews. He was dearly loved and respected by his family, friends and co-workers who had the honor of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Preston "Kenny" Putnam, sister, Elizabeth Ann Blake and a brother, Jimmy Ray Putnam.
