Obituary of John Smith

John David Smith, 85, died peacefully Monday at Wake Med in Raleigh. He was a native of Harnett County and was employed by Carolina Power and Light Co. retiring with 37 years of service. John was a devoted family man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He served as a "Den Father" with Cub Scouts and afterwards became actively involved in Boy Scouts. He liked the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Betty Smith; sons, Tony Smith and wife Sally of Raleigh, and Davey Smith and companion Linda of Fuquay Varina; grandchildren, Joshua and Gabriel Smith of Fuquay Varina, Emily Smith of Knightdale and Megan Smith of Raleigh; great-grandchildren, Brook and Brantley Smith of Fuquay Varina; brother, Howard Smith of Raleigh; sisters, Marie Pope of Gretna, VA and Polly Parrish of Benson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Thursday at Montlawn Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 - 3:00 pm Thursday.
