Obituary of John Spencer

John Graham Spencer, 89, of Cary, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 5, 2014 at Glenaire Retirement Community.

Born March 3, 1925 in Washington, NC, he was the son of the late Walter Lee Spencer and Gertrude Midyette. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Lee, Jr. of Sacramento, CA, Baxter of Portsmouth, VA, and Richard Payne of Carmel, CA; and a sister Alice Stone of Murrieta, CA.

The family moved to Raleigh in 1926 where his father practiced law. He went to Hayes Barton Grammar School (now Myrtle Underwood) and Needham Broughton High School. He was an outstanding athlete in track, football and basketball.

After High School, he joined the United States Navy and served on the Richard S. Bull, a destroyer escort, DE402 from 1943 until 1946. His ship was in five major battles in the Pacific Theater. He was a part of the Greatest Generation.

After WWII, he entered the N.C. State University where he played football and basketball. He graduated in 1949 with a degree in Textiles and worked in manufacturing and Sales until he retired in 1989.

Graham was a charter member and officer of the "Ole Raleigh Boys Club". He served the Lord throughout the years in several churches as a Deacon, teacher and usher.

Graham is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jetta Funderburk Spencer; sons, Graham Spencer, Jr. and his wife Beverly; of Raleigh, Dr. Jim Spencer and wife Sandy of Kannapolis; 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Hamrick and husband Larry of Kings Mountain, NC.

A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the church parlor. The burial will be private.
