Obituary of John Strickland

John Dunton Strickland, 69, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2013 Christmas Day, at William Dunlap Hospice Center in Raleigh, with his family by his side. He was born September 5, 1944 in Currituck County to Philip Lionel Dunton and Elizabeth Rowland Dunton. His parents died when he was very young and his Great Aunt Pattie Collins Strickland of Louisburg raised him from age 7.

John graduated from Louisburg High School and attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.

John retired from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceutical, Inc. in Raleigh, NC in 2012 after 45 years of service.

He was an avid bowler, a member of the United States Bowling Congress and the Capital Area Bowling Congress for 35 years. He served on the Raleigh Bowling Association as President, was inducted into the Raleigh Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 2003 and was a State Director of the NC Bowling Association.

John is survived by his wife of 25 years, Nancy J. Strickland; daughter, Michele Matthews (Scott) of Raleigh; granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Mackenzie Matthews of Raleigh; He will be missed by his family and friends.

A visitation is scheduled from 6-8 pm Friday, December 27, 2013 at Montlawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 pm Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank the compassionate medical staff at Duke Raleigh Cancer Center who were instrumental in caring for and adding priceless years to his life. They also request that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in John's memory to Duke Raleigh Cancer Center, 3404 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC 27609.
