Obituary

Joyce Jones Causey was born on December 12, 1939. The eldest of three girls, Joyce was born to the proud parents of Corrine and Dalton Jones on a tobacco farm near Trenton, NC. After a long and fulfilling life, Joyce passed away peacefully at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC, surrounded by her loving family, on February 9, 2025.

Joyce is survived by her husband Jerry Causey of Cary, NC and her two sons Jerel Causey (Leslie) of Atlanta, GA and Jeff Causey (Ashley) of Roanoke, TX as well as her four grandchildren Caroline, Chase, Brooks and Banks. She also is survived by her two sisters Lois Tharrington (Bill) of Summerfield, NC and Dot Smith (Roger) of Benson, NC.

Joyce lived her life to its fullest. She was the first in her family to attend college. She graduated from ECU with a major in Education and went on to receive her Masters degree, after which she enjoyed teaching elementary school for 7 years in Elizabeth City and Roanoke Rapids.

Joyce met her future husband while he was working in Trenton in the summer of 1961. They were happily married at Trenton Baptist Church on July 17, 1966. Shortly thereafter, they lived in multiple States before Jerry was deployed to Vietnam. Joyce worked, prayed, and encouraged Jerry until his safe return after which they moved to Elizabeth City, NC where Jerel and Jeff were born. They moved several times associated with Jerry's job before ultimately settling in Cary, NC in 1999.

Joyce's greatest success and satisfaction in life could be found in her fierce loyalty and love for her family. She was a dedicated and loving mother, wife, and grandmother. She raised her sons to know the power of family and how to serve others. A lesson they learned and passed on to their own families as part of her legacy. Joyce loved to spoil her grandchildren, constantly surprising them with presents, hidden candy and anything else she could find an excuse to do. Joyce particularly loved spending time with her sons and her grandchildren at school events, sporting events and Christmas. This was precious time they will always remember.

Joyce's sisters were her closest friends. Their love and dedication towards each other never wavered over the years. She was a diligent big sister, constantly doing whatever she could to look out for her family. Her sisters' families were simply an extension of her family and therefore everyone across multiple generations grew up together as one large, loving family.

Joyce was the epitome of Proverbs 31, a virtuous woman. She was the quiet strength behind her family's successes in life - never needing or wanting the praise but doing everything possible to support them along the way. Together Jerry and Joyce traveled extensively both for pleasure and for the purpose of serving and using their gifts to help others through mission work. They were very active in the Baptist Churches where they lived over the years and got a lot of strength from those communities. For the last 24 years, they have been active members of Hayes Barton Baptist Church. They also dedicated many years to supporting disaster relief efforts through NC Baptist on Mission.

Joyce was the rock of our family and will be forever missed.

There will be a memorial service for Joyce at Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh on Thursday, February 13th at 2pm.
