Obituary

Kenneth Lawrence "Larry" Horton III, 67, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died on November 1, 2017 in a tragic accident. Larry was hunting with his brother-in-law during a professionally guided Elk hunting trip on a windy and snowy day in Salmon/Challis National Forest, Idaho. While he lay resting with the other hunters, an 80-foot dead tree (called a SNAG) fell on his chest; no one else was injured. He died quickly while in the arms of his brother-in-law, Terry Corpening of Conover, NC. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Donna Corpening Horton; daughter Laura Lee Horton of Raleigh; son Hugh Horton (wife, Jewell) of Watha, NC; and step-daughter Shannon Ferrell (husband, Joshua) of Wendell, NC; as well as six grandchildren. As an only child, his cousins Bennie and Robbie of South Carolina were like brothers to him. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Lawrence Horton Jr., and mother Merle Rahn Horton. A fervent wolfpack fan, Larry graduated from North Carolina State University with a masters degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for Triangle Engineering before becoming a professional consulting engineer; he then moved on to work for the State of North Carolina. He recently retired from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund on June 1, 2017. Larry was a member of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church where he and his wife both met and married. An avid outdoorsman and member of Loop Road Hunting Club, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and yard work. Larry was beloved by his family in both North and South Carolina. Known for his positive spirit, contagious smile, and the genuine interest he took in others, Larry will be deeply missed. The family is most grateful for the love and support that has been given to them. Visitation will be from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm, November 6, 2017, at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh NC, 27603. The funeral service will take place at 10:00 am, November 7, 2017, at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church, 27 Horne Street, Raleigh, NC, 27607, with lunch to follow; the graveside service will be at 1:00 pm at Montlawn Memorial Park.
