CARY- Lawrence Edwin "Larry" Watkins died November 26, 2014 at Rex Hospital. He was the son of John R. Watkins and Loney Watkins Gilmore.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa G. Watkins. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Barbara B. Watkins; son, John L. Watkins; daughter Teresa W. Blake and husband Tony; grandchildren, Marshall Kermon and wife, Nicole, Jason L. Watkins, Justin A. Blake and Emma G. Watkins; great-grandsons, Locklen and Holden Kermon; special mother-in-law, Ruby Bullock.

Larry served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and also served in the Naval Reserve, National Guard and as a commissioned officer in the Air Force Reserve.

He graduated from Hugh Morson High School and also from NC State University with a degree in mechanical engineering and furthered his studies in management at UNC.

He had a distinguished career in Heating and Air Conditioning as the Executive Vice President of Thermo Industries. He was a dedicated family man, and was very knowledgeable and a born leader. He had a great sense of humor and a very generous spirit. He and his wife enjoyed trips to many countries as well as spending time at his home on the coast. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels. Larry will be greatly missed by all who knew him, particularly his children and grandchildren who relied on him for sound advice and so much love.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Montlawn Funeral Home. A private graveside service for the family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of Wake County, 616 Tucker Street, Raleigh 27603, The Salvation Army, 1863 Capital Blvd., Raleigh, NC 27604 or Compassionatefriends.org
