September 25, 1938 – April 19, 2025
Lois Elizabeth Haigh Gibbon, 86, of Raleigh, NC, passed away after an extended illness Saturday, April 19, 2025 at Novant Matthews Medical Center, Matthews, NC. She was born in Raleigh, NC on September 25, 1938, and graduated from Broughton High School and Meredith College, both in Raleigh.
Lois was an avid supporter of education throughout her life, giving tirelessly of her time to her children's schools. For over 50 years, Lois was an active member of P.E.O., an International Philanthropic Educational Organization that supports the education of women. Lois was also an active church member throughout her life. As a lay representative to the United Campus Chapel at Radford College in Radford, VA in the 1970's, she served as coordinator of an interfaith intergenerational Sunday school, and provided general support to the Campus Ministry. Upon her return to Raleigh, she and husband Ed were active members of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church. Lois introduced the work of Glen and Rita Chapman in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to the Church and supported the Chapman's Ministry in the DRC.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Ben W. and Emma Ruth Payne Haigh, and her brother, Carl W. Haigh. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ed Gibbon of Raleigh, NC; daughters Meg Gibbon (Angela Pelletier) of Washington, DC and Kara Haden (Gerry) of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren Jamie Smith of Washington, DC, and Addison Haden and Matthew Haden of Charlotte, NC; and three great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Friday, May 9, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC, with Reverends Cathy Tamsberg and Chalice Overy officiating. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in memory of Lois Haigh Gibbon, NC Chapter I, to the "P.E.O. Star Scholarship", c/o P.E.O. Executive Office, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312.
