Marjorie Barefoot Washburn died peacefully at home in Raleigh, NC on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the age of 84. She is survived by her son Tom Washburn of Raleigh, NC and her sister Opal Price of Concord, NC.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas P. Washburn of Raleigh, NC, her father Braxton Craven Barefoot of Four Oaks, NC, her mother Betty Morgan Barefoot of Four Oaks, NC, her sisters Mildred Lee of Four Oaks, NC, Mercedes Walker Weekly of New Iberia, LA, Atelia Smith of Audubon, PA, Juanita Caddell of Raleigh, NC, her brothers Kovess Barefoot of Smithfield, NC, Hoover Barefoot of Raleigh, NC and BC Barefoot of Four Oaks, NC.
She was born on March 5, 1934 in Four Oaks, NC to Braxton Craven Barefoot and Betty Morgan Barefoot. She graduated from Four Oaks High School. She attended 1 year of secretarial school at Campbell College. She married Thomas P. Washburn in 1956 and they had a wonderful marriage until he passed away earlier this year. She worked for over 40 years with NC Services for the Blind where she also learned braille, and she created the braille that was included as part of the mural on the wall of the Education Building on Government Mall in downtown Raleigh. She retired from the state in 1996. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. She greatly enjoyed the fellowship with the members of her Sunday school class. She was a longtime member of the Raleigh Lioness Club. She was a member of the Raleigh Sports Club and she enjoyed attending the weekly meetings with her husband and son until her declining health prevented her from attending. She was a great Christian lady, always had a smile for everyone she met and she would do whatever she could for anyone that needed her help.
The family would like to give special thanks to all the wonderful, kind, compassionate people at UNC Rex Healthcare, Transitions Life Care and Home Care Assistance, and also to the wonderful members of her Sunday school class.
The visitation and funeral will be held at Montlawn Funeral Home on S. Wilmington St. in Raleigh, NC on Tuesday, August 7, 2018. Visitation will be at 11:00 am and the service at 12 noon with burial to follow. All are welcomed to attend and celebrate Marjorie's life.
