Obituary of Mary Simpkins

Mary Lea Simpkins, 95, passed away Easter morning, April 20, 2014. She was born in Raleigh on May 12, 1918 to John and Bertha Lea; her father was the last miller to operate Yates Mill and Mary spent her early years playing around the mill and the pond. She married K.T. Simpkins on November 16, 1941 and they were married for 70 years before his death in 2012. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary is predeceased by her sisters, Nina Hunter and Janet Lea and her brother, John Lea, Jr. Mary is survived by her nieces and nephews, Ann Pearson, Deborah Hunter, Janet Matthews, Patricia Rhiner, Jerry Hunter, Harold Hunter, Steve Hunter and Alan Hunter. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26 at the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 am. Mary will be remembered for her smile, her unusual sense of humor and her storytelling abilities. She was truly one of a kind.
