Melvin F. Newton, 89, of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday evening, January 24, 2024.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife of 69 ½ years, Nancy Moore Newton, and by his precious daughter, Julia L. Newton of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Joel L. Newton

Melvin was born in Granville County, NC on January 20, 1935, the 9th child and 6th son of Troy Taylor Newton and Betty Lou Overton Newton. He graduated in 1953 from Millbrook High School; which is where he met his sweetheart, Nancy.  They married in 1954. Melvin retired after 30 years of service with the Department of Crop Science, North Carolina State University. Melvin loved spending time with his wife and children, his siblings, being outdoors, "puttering" around his property, and raising his farm animals. He also enjoyed sharing a good-natured joke. In addition to his son, Joel, and his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his brothers Robert, J.D., Alvin, Wilbur, Cleo, Everette, and his sisters Virginia Green, Alice McLeod, Eunice Ferrell and Barbara Jean Newton. Melvin is also survived by his cousin Olevia F. Miller, his brother-in-law Donald W. Moore (Jane), many dear friends and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh. The family will receive visitors prior to the service beginning at 12:00 p.m.  Interment will follow the services in Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh, North Carolina Memorial contributions may be made to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh NC, 27607, or to a charity of one's choice.
