Mildred Stephens Kirkman Brown
It is with great sadness that the family of Mildred Stephens Kirkman Brown announces her passing after a long illness, on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at the age of 86 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of thirty seven years, William Fred Brown, her children, Vic Kirkman, Jr. (Beverly), Penny Kirkman Sullivan (Phil), and James Byron Kirkman, all of Raleigh. She was blessed with two loving stepchildren, Jerry Brown (Annette), and Freda MacKenzie (Calvin).
Mildred has nine grandchildren she dearly loved: Kay Sharp (Glen), Kevin Kirkman (Beth), Mark Stone (Linda), Betsy Sullivan, Phil Sullivan, III, Brian Sullivan, Courtney Hale (Jaime), Greer Kirkman (Katie) and Walker MacKenzie. She had ten precious great grandchildren: Grant, Nora, Kristina, Jason, Phoebe, Liam, Blake, Reese, Malea and a great, great granddaughter, Leah. She also leaves behind four nieces and one nephew: Carrie Ann Small (Doug), Helen Loizou, Christina Powell, Donna Creed (Don), and Simmons Stephens (Sherry).
Mildred was born in Proctorsville, NC on September 30, 1922 to Caleb Green Stephens and Carrie Bell Wilkerson Stephens. She graduated from Lumberton High School and married her high school sweetheart, George Victor Kirkman on December 31, 1940. They were married for 30 years and raised their children, Vic, Penny and Byron in Lumberton. They were members of Chestnut Street United Methodist Church for many years.
Mildred was predeceased by her first husband, Vic Kirkman, her parents, C.G. and Carrie Stephens; four brothers, Simmons, Jerome, Broughton, and Jack Stephens as well as two sisters, Mary Stephens Raybon and Carrie Stephens Lee.
Mildred married William Fred Brown of Fayetteville in 1971and they made their home in Cary. She retired from N.C. State University where she was an auditor for the Agriculture Extension Office.
The family will receive visitors on Sunday, November 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC, 27603.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Mildred's life will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 17 in the Chapel of Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC. with Dr. David Hailey officiating. Interment will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville at 3:30 PM.
