Nancy Smith Byrd, 84, of Apex, passed away in Garner, on Thursday, October 27, 2022. She was born in Johnston County on October 2, 1938 a daughter of the late Hiram and Thelma (Tart) Smith. Along with her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Richard Byrd, her daughter Kathy Creech, and her brothers, Keith and Ken Smith.

Nancy grew up on a farm in Meadow, North Carolina. She retired after 30 years of service as a Registered Nurse at Dorothea Dix Hospital. She loved spending time outside planting flowers, and watching hummingbirds. You could always hear her a mile away cheering from the bleachers on the ball field. When indoors she loved to cook and play cards, especially Rook, with her friends and family. Nancy was highly involved in her ladies church group to help provide meals to families in need.

Nancy is survived by her daughters: Sandy Phillips and husband, Jay, and Renee Boyette and husband, Mark; grandchildren: Jason Phillips and wife, Sabrina, Dylan Phillips, Brittany and Brooke Boyette; great grandchildren: Jake and Samantha Phillips, siblings: James Smith and wife, Hilda, Hiram Smith, Jr., and wife, Wanda, Johnny Smith and wife, Donna, Stacy Smith and wife, Sylvia, Sherry Johnson, and husband, H.M.; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 from 12:30 pm - 2 pm at Montlawn Funeral Home 2911 S. Wilmington St. Raleigh, where a funeral service will begin at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.
