Obituary of Robert Gordon Jr.
Robert Neely Gordon, Jr., age 67, passed away at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC on January 21, 2015. He was born in Raleigh to the late Robert Neely Gordon, Sr. and Dorothy G. Hunter. He was a kind, gentle and humble family man who always had a big smile.
He lived in Concord, NC for much of his childhood. Playing the trumpet in the Mt. Pleasant High School Marching Band was the highlight of his school years. He moved to Raleigh and married his wife, Betty, in 1967. During their 47 years together they raised 2 children, Christie and Bobby. He also became a father figure to team members of the Dixie Dew Cloggers Competition Team as he was the bus driver, chaperone and sound equipment technician.
While serving as a volunteer fireman for Fairgrounds Fire Dept. he earned his EMT certification.
As grounds keeper at Eagle Crest Golf Course, Garner, NC, he became skilled in turf management and also taught himself how to play golf. He also applied his grass-cutting skills at his own personal home. Friends and neighbors often admired how he manicured his plush green grass as his technique was the "only right way".
The training he received during his years of working for Perry Circuits and Southeastern Screenprinting provided the knowledge and skills that lead him to start his own business. In 1981 he and wife, Betty, started Precision Screen Print & Monograms, which they have owned and operated together for 34 years.
His grandchildren were the highlight of his life. He played games with them in the yard and attended sports events and baseball games to support them. Many of the other ball players also called him 'Grandpa', the name that was embroidered on the back of all his ball hat.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Gordon of Raleigh; daughter, Christie Gordon of Benson, NC; son, Robert W. (Bobby) Gordon and wife Becky of Benson, NC; 4 grandchildren - TJ Supple, Josh Supple, Bradley Gordon, Tyler Gordon; sisters: Patsy Greer and husband Bill of Raleigh NC; Joyce Manshack and husband Donny of Raleigh NC; Kathy Gordon of Raleigh NC; Bonnie Cotton and husband Mike of Zebulon, NC and multiple aunts, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Family visitation will be held at Montlawn Funeral Home on Sunday, January 25, 10 am - 12 pm; service at 12 pm to celebrate his life in the Montlawn Chapel, followed by burial at Montlawn Memorial Park.
