RALEIGH
Roger A. Schurrer, 88 of Raleigh, NC passed away January 1, 2022 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.
Roger was born in Centerville, Wisconsin and later moved to North Carolina upon entering the Marine Corp.He met and married his wife Sally in 1958. He attended East Carolina University graduating with a BS in Education. He then taught at New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC and then became an Assistant Principal there after earning a MS in Education from East Carolina.
He and his family moved to Raleigh, NC in 1966 where Roger then began his career with The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. He held various positions there including General Secondary Supervisor, Assistant Director in General Education Division, Planning Consultant for Division of Planning. After earning his Doctorate of Education from Duke University he held various positions including Director for Division of Planning, Director for Division of Accreditation, Deputy Assistant State Superintendent for Personnel Services, and Senior Staff Assistant in Office of Program and Instructional Services.
He retired from The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in 2002 receiving the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for his service to the state of North Carolina.
Roger was preceded in death by his father, Edwin, mother Teckla, and stepmother Lorena, He was also preceded in death by his wife Sally, his mother and father in law Mark and Ruby Goff, sister in laws Betty Lou Denton and Thelma Goff.
Roger is survived by his daughter Sandra Tetterton (Tom), sister in laws Faye Harper (Ed) and Amaryllis Dawes, brother in laws Horace Goff and Ikey Denton and many numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a brother Alan (Ellen) and two nephews.
