IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ruby Scarborough
Griffin
December 11, 1919 – June 26, 2020
WAKE FOREST
Ruby Scarborough Griffin passed gently and peacefully from this life on the evening of June 26 when our Precious Lord took her hand and led her home. And we know that she was met there with open arms by her beloved parents, Hattie and Cater Scarborough, and her four sisters, Lacy Eddins, Lois Vaughan, Lottie Currin, and Linda Gay. She loved her parents and sisters deeply and generously gave of herself to be there for them whenever they needed her. All of her life, Ruby especially cherished her happy memories of growing up with her sisters on the family farm just outside Rolesville. And she expressed in a poem her faith that someday they would "All be together again, Home at last."
Ruby graduated from Rolesville High School. She was a beautiful young woman whose heart was ever reaching out for love. Her beautiful, bright smile, and easy way of speaking are remembered. She had a sweet and friendly disposition, yet she demanded to be reckoned with. And she always cared about the way she presented herself, in the way she looked, in her manner and conduct.
Ruby had a tenacious love for her children. In a poignant moment, her son reflected, "She always loved us!" She was close to nieces and cousins who remember her as being a caring haven for them over the years. They visited with her at Hillside and shared treasured memories.
Ruby enjoyed her 100th birthday in December with family and friends gathered to celebrate with her at Hillside Nursing Center in Wake Forest. She has been a resident at Hillside since December 2012 when she moved into a room there with her sister, Linda, and with another sister, Lois, just down the hall. All in their nineties, they were so happy to be together and were blessed with several years with each other there.
Ruby had an avid faith in Jesus Christ throughout her life that she counted on for solace and hope. She had many experiences during her long life that were heartbreaking to her but through it all, her faith was unwavering. She was a member of Rolesville Baptist Church in her youth and Friendship Baptist Church in her adult years. During her years at Hillside, she enjoyed services with the Tuesday night visiting church and the pastors and their wives and young children who would come visit and sing to her when she didn't feel like attending.
In her last years at Hillside, she had a new, special friend from Heritage Baptist Church, who visited her every week. She shared that Ruby was a delight to know, a sweet friend. She remembers that Ruby loved to reminisce about growing up in her loving home. That, in her last year, Ruby talked a lot about wanting to be in Heaven. She talked about loving Jesus and said she was not afraid of dying and couldn't wait to see Linda again. (When they were young, it had been Ruby's job to look after Linda who was only a couple of years younger. And she still considered it her job during their shared years at Hillside, to both Linda's gratitude and annoyance.)
Ruby is survived by her children: Sue Moses, Larry Upchurch, and Gail Stewart; grandchildren: Brooks and Shane Moses, Brandon and Taylor Upchurch, and Christie DeHoff; nieces and nephews: Marian Hicks, Alice Clark, Wayne and Bennie Vaughan, Fay Jones and Frances Thornburg. And many cousins, all loved.
The family would like to express our gratitude to the staff at Hillside Nursing Center who have given Ruby such kind and excellent care, and especially to Nurses Michelle and Christine and Dr. Kwok for the loving comfort they have provided her during these last weeks.
In remembrance of Ruby (in lieu of flowers), please send any contributions to Hillside Nursing Center or Heritage Baptist Church or the charity of your choice. Thank you!
