Obituary of Sanford Lane

Sanford "Sandy" A. Lane, 85, died on May 7, 2011 of complications related to a stroke. Mr. Lane passed away at the Hospice of Wake County after a brief stay there.

Mr. Lane was born in Morral, Ohio on September 4, 1925. After stateside World War II service in the U.S. Army, he earned a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering at Ohio State University.

While working for a public utility in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Lane met Janice M. Lane, who would become his wife of 60 years.

Mr. Lane enjoyed a varied career in applied engineering with several corporations and served as a professor and administrator at the community college and engineering technology level. Along the way, he earned a masters degree in mechanical engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology and a doctorate in education at Ohio University.

Upon his 1993 retirement from his position as Dean of Engineering Technology at Rio Grande University in southeastern Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Lane retired to Apex, North Carolina.

Born into a musical family, Mr. Lane was a life long musician. He played in the Ohio State University marching band and sang recreationally in a number of barbershop quartets. He was a habitual whistler, impressing many with his offhand renditions of complex musical pieces.

Mr. Lane was preceded in death by his daughter Nina A. Lane. He is survived by wife Janice M. Lane of Traverse City, Michigan; his daughter Barbara A. Lane of Jacksonville, Florida; and his granddaughter Annabelle R. Langley of Louisburg, North Carolina.

Private Inurnment at Raleigh Memorial Park will be held at a later date.
