Obituary of Sharon Smith
Sharon Miller Smith passed away on Tuesday January 7th, 2014, shortly after 11 a.m. She had spent the last year battling cancer. Her last week was spent at the SECU Hospice house in Smithfield, where she was looked after by a few dedicated and wonderful people who helped ease her suffering in every way possible, right up to the end. On that Tuesday morning, her husband Mitch received a call saying she had taken a turn for the worse. He and her brother Laurence and son Michael arrived as quickly as possible to spend her last few hours with her.
Sharon was born Sharon Kathleen Miller on March 3rd , 1946, in Frederick, Maryland. She is survived by her husband, Malcolm Mitchell Smith, her son Michael and daughter-in-law Christie, as well as her two grandchildren, Freya and Erik Smith. She has a brother and a sister living in Maryland, Laurence Miller Sr. and Darlene Barry.
Sharon touched the lives of many, many people in her 67 years. She set up her husband's younger brother, Jerry, with her friend Sandra from work, and they have been married now since 1983. In the mid-80's she volunteered to help tutor inner-city youth in Raleigh in mathematics so they could graduate. She helped Vietnamese refugees who had moved to the Triangle by bringing them food and supplies and helping them find jobs and navigate a foreign culture and language barrier.
She was a wife, mother, and grandmother and the very best of all three.
It has been said that everything a person does affects everyone around them in ways they can't foresee, like ripples on a pond moving across the water. If that's true, then the world is much the worse for Sharon's leaving it.
We will miss her and cherish her memory always.
A memorial gathering is being planned for friends and family with the location and date to be announced as plans become finalized.
