Obituary

On Friday, August 11, 2023, Shirley Davis Beck of Raleigh passed away peacefully at the age of 86. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Shirley was born on April 28, 1937 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Mark and Essie Davis, and even though she left Alabama  as a young adult, she was living proof that you can take the girl out of Alabama, but you can't take the Alabama out of the girl. She remained a Bama fan for life. Roll tide.

She was a woman who knew what she liked and stuck with it, as evidenced by her iconic hairstyle and that bedazzled stonewashed denim shirt. And as much as she loved those fashion choices, she loved her family infinitely more, a love that was demonstrated every time she asked for a phone call to let her know they got home safely, every time the family gathered around the giant table in her dining room, and every time she wouldn't let them leave her house without taking a pack of cookies or piece of candy. And sometimes this was demonstrated with a tough love when she beat them all mercilessly at Farkle or Texas Hold 'Em or Skip Bo or Phase 10. She took her dice and card games very seriously. People knew where they stood with Shirley. Friends and family never had to wonder what she was thinking because she wouldn't hesitate to tell them exactly what was on her mind. She was as consistent in that trait as she was in doing her crossword puzzle every day and reading a book every night.

She is survived by her daughter Ellon Hampton and her partner Larry, of Four Oaks, NC, her son Dino Beck and wife Teresa of Fort Mill, SC. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ashley Hutchinson and her husband Rich of Greenville, NC Jacob Hampton and wife Ashley of Four Oaks, NC  Trevor Beck and wife Jackie of Rock Hill, SC and Braden Beck of Fort Mill, SC, as well as five great-grandchildren, William Hutchinson, Preston Hampton, Addison Grace Hutchinson, Landon Hampton, and Norah Hampton. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Bert Beck, her parents, Mark and Essie Davis, brothers Steve and Sonny Davis, and sisters Emma Self, Joy Holt, and Thelma Sharit.
