Obituary

Stephanie Lyn Mayo, age 70, died March 4, 2026, after a battle with cancer.
Stephanie was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and enjoyed a wonderful upbringing there.
Snow skiing all winter plus Camp Newaygo and family times at the cottage in the summer
made Michigan a terrific state to grow up in. She graduated from Central Michigan
University with a degree teaching English and history at the secondary level.
When friends invited her down to Florida where there was an urgent need for teachers, she
loaded up her car and headed to St. Petersburg. Her first school there was fantastic, and
she stayed for many years, discovering that she loved teaching literature and language arts
to 7th-graders. But she missed the seasons and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. When
she retired, she bought a house out in the country in Clayton, North Carolina.
Stephanie suffered some tragedy in her life, such as the loss of her 25-year-old brother,
Steven to leukemia. Also, the sudden and unexpected death of her father, Roger, was a
shock. However, she also found tremendous joy in so many areas of daily life.
Stephanie is survived by her mother and best friend, Barbara Mayo-Johnson and loving
brother Brian Mayo. She is also survived by her mother's sister, Stevie Potter, her children
and grandchildren, and uncle Dick Andringa of California and many other cousins. She had
two wonderful and loving caregivers, her dear friend Joni Currin, and her cousin Amy
Devries.
Stephanie loved her life and has chosen not to have a funeral or gathering of any kind.
Cremation has already taken place.
There will be no services at this time.
Montlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park are honored to serve the Mayo family.
