Obituary

Susie Lee Denton Adams passed away on July 29, 2024 at the age of 89. She is the daughter of the late John Reid Denton, Sr. and Ethel Moore Denton. She is survived by her daughters Kathy Powell (husband Mark) and Tracy Bass (husband Barry), her son David Adams, her grandchildren Zach Powell, Kaitlyn Powell, Kyle Bass (wife Madison), Sam Bass, Aubry Bass (wife Sabrina), John Adams (wife Regina), Ray Adams (wife Amy), and Matt Adams (wife Amanda), as well as her great grandchildren, Scarlett, Daisy, Madison, Alexis and Wesley.  She is preceded in death by her sons Mark and Bruce Adams. She is also preceded in death by brothers John and Bill Denton, both of whom served in World War II.

Susie was born in Pitt County and grew up in Raleigh where she lived most of her life. She graduated 1953 from Hugh Morson High School in Raleigh and attended East Carolina University and Peace College.

Growing up a block from the State Capitol, Susie loved the Capitol grounds and the downtown area. A treasured treat was going to the movies, where during intermission, she loved seeing dancers perform on the theater stage, which sparked her interest in becoming a dancer.  Susie enrolled in dancing lessons as a child and would go on to become a member of The Roxyettes dance troupe in her early twenties, traveling to various cities throughout the United States and Canada. She taught dancing for Emanuel-Kovach Dance School and later opened her own dance school, Cary Dance Academy, in downtown Cary where she taught for 25 years. Dancing was Susie's passion. She enjoyed being a cast member in several Raleigh Little Theater productions in the early 1960's. She was a choreographer and coach to contestants of the Miss Raleigh, Miss Cary, Miss North Carolina, and Cary Junior Miss Pageants in the 1960's and 1970's. After retiring from dancing, Susie worked for Dillard's, North Carolina Farm Bureau, K & S Cafeteria, and Belk Cafeteria. As a child, she attended First Presbyterian Church, and as an adult attended White Memorial Church and Cary Presbyterian Church.

Growing up with the Greatest Generation and having two brothers that served in World War II, Susie always had a special place in her heart for the United States Military. Her brother, John, who was an US Army Air Force Bomber Pilot, was killed in action returning from a bombing mission in Germany. Her brother, Bill, served as a Hellcat pilot in the US Navy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Susie's name to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306 or t2t.org or to NAMI North Carolina, 309 W. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609 or naminc.org.

The family will have a private service to honor Susie's life. The family would like to thank Avendelle Rolesville for their attentive, loving care of Susie during her residency, Hillcrest Raleigh, and Gentiva Hospice.
